Poppy Seed, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to poppy seed, defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, and identifying allergens responsible for allergic response and/or anaphylactic episodes. It can confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy and investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions

Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies may not be useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists, or in patients where medical management does not depend on identification of allergen specificity. False-positive results for IgE antibodies can occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases.
