Pork, IgE, Serum
Use
The test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to pork and for defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It aids in identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes and confirms sensitization before beginning immunotherapy. It also investigates the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, refer to the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies document. If not ordering electronically, complete and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen. Authorized users can access detailed fee information via the Test Prices portal.
Limitations
The test is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in patients where medical management does not depend upon the identification of allergen specificity. IgE antibody testing can show false positives in patients with elevated total IgE levels due to nonspecific binding.
