Post Vasectomy Check, Semen
Use
The Post Vasectomy Check, Semen test is used to determine the absence or presence of sperm following a vasectomy. Sperm may persist in the semen for several weeks to months post-procedure. Regular ejaculation every 3 to 4 days may expedite sperm clearance from the reproductive tract. This test is recommended 3 months post-vasectomy and after at least 20 ejaculations to ensure azoospermia or detect rare nonmotile sperm, thereby confirming the success of the vasectomy and eliminating the need for further contraception.
Special Instructions
Specimens must arrive within 24 hours of collection. They should be sent Monday through Thursday only and not on the day before a holiday. Testing is not performed on weekends. Include semen volume and number of days of sexual abstinence with the specimen.
Limitations
A single post-vasectomy semen specimen that shows zero sperm detected typically indicates no further need for contraception. However, rare nonmotile sperm may occasionally be detected, which may not necessitate repeat testing or procedures. A high count of nonmotile sperm (>100,000/mL) persisting beyond 6 months may indicate vasectomy failure and might require further clinical assessment. Proper collection and handling are crucial for an accurate result.
