Use
This test is used for the evaluation of electrolyte balance, helps to monitor cardiac arrhythmias, muscular weaknesses, hepatic encephalopathy, and renal failure. Potassium levels are crucial in maintaining many body functions and disturbances in potassium homeostasis can have severe physiological implications.
Special Instructions
Patient's age and sex are required for this test order. If not ordering electronically, complete one of the provided test request forms and send it with the specimen.
Limitations
No significant cautionary statements are noted, however, improper specimen collection and handling can interfere. It is important to centrifuge serum gel tubes within 2 hours of collection, and red-top tubes should be centrifuged and aliquoted into a plastic vial within 2 hours of collection.
