Progesterone Receptor (PR) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for the qualitative detection of progesterone receptor protein in a diagnostic setting. The progesterone receptor is a hormone receptor localized within the nucleus and is highly expressed in the epithelial cells of the breast and endometrium, as well as smooth muscle cells of the uterus. Detecting its presence can help assess hormonal responsiveness in breast cancer, commonly used alongside estrogen receptor testing.
Special Instructions
This test is technical component only and does not include a pathologist's interpretation. If pathologist interpretation is required, the test should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation as the technical components will be canceled otherwise. Attach appropriate labels to the transport container. Ordering must be done electronically to access digital images, and orders via a manual requisition will not have digital access.
Limitations
This test does not provide patient-specific pathologist interpretation and requires additional ordering if needed. The age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, and stability thresholds for antigens vary. Glass slide chemistry can be altered by environmental factors affecting stain results. To maintain slide integrity, minimize exposure to humidity, heat, and plastics, and limit storage time after unpacking.

Collection Instructions
Submit formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue block or 2 unstained, positively charged glass slides per test ordered; sections 4-microns thick. Attach the green 'Attention Pathology' address label (T498) and the pink Immunostain Technical Only label to the outside of the transport container.
Storage Instructions
Handling and storage should avoid high humidity and heat. Store slides in the prescribed containers to maintain their chemical properties.
Causes for Rejection
Wet/frozen tissue, cytology smears, nonformalin-fixed tissue, nonparaffin-embedded tissue, noncharged slides, ProbeOn slides, Snowcoat slides are causes for rejection.
