Use
Progesterone testing is useful for ascertaining whether ovulation occurred in a menstrual cycle, assessing infertility, evaluating abnormal uterine bleeding, and placental health in high-risk pregnancies. It helps determine the effectiveness of progesterone injections in supporting early pregnancy and aids in the workup of patients with adrenal disorders. Elevated or decreased levels provide insights into reproductive and adrenal health.
Special Instructions
Patient should avoid taking multivitamins or dietary supplements containing biotin for 12 hours before specimen collection. This is particularly relevant for hair, skin, and nail supplements which may affect test results.
Limitations
The assessment requires correlation with the menstrual cycle phase since taking estrogen and progesterone supplements can affect results. Interference may occur with high titers of antibodies to ruthenium and streptavidin. Tests involving monoclonal mouse antibodies might lead to erroneous findings if the patient has been treated with or exposed to such antibodies.

Serum gel tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection and serum aliquoted into a plastic vial. Red-top tubes should be centrifuged, and serum aliquoted into a plastic vial within 2 hours of collection.
