Prolonged Clot Time Profile Interpretation
Use
This test is useful for the interpretation of testing performed as part of a profile to determine the cause of prolongation of prothrombin time or activated partial thromboplastin time. It is used as a screening tool for prolonged clotting times and helps in determining the presence of factor deficiencies or inhibitors, such as factor-specific, lupus-like, or the presence of heparin.
Special Instructions
The test is not orderable directly and is only available as part of a profile. It requires interpretation by a coagulation expert who reviews the laboratory data and issues an interpretive report. Adjust anticoagulant volume if the patient's hematocrit is 55% or greater before submitting the specimen for analysis.
Limitations
This test is not suitable for patients who are currently receiving oral vitamin K inhibitor (e.g., warfarin), heparin, low-molecular weight heparin, hirudin, argatroban, or fibrinolytic agents like streptokinase. Medications affecting coagulation must be noted on the requisition for accurate interpretation. Testing should be performed pre-transfusion if possible to avoid inconsistencies.
