Protein, Total, Serum
Use
This test is useful for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases involving the liver, kidney, or bone marrow, as well as other metabolic or nutritional disorders. It helps in assessing the total protein levels in the serum, which can indicate conditions such as dehydration, polyclonal or monoclonal protein production due to inflammatory processes or hematopoietic neoplasms like multiple myeloma.
Special Instructions
Patient's age and sex are required for the test. Ensure specimens are properly centrifuged within 2 hours of collection. If not ordering electronically, complete the Renal Diagnostics Test Request form and send it with the specimen.
Limitations
The total protein concentration can be 0.4 to 0.8 mg/dL lower when the specimen is collected from a patient in the recumbent position. Hemoconcentration or hemodilution can affect protein levels, requiring serum protein electrophoresis for further evaluation in cases of abnormal protein levels.
