Rabbit Epithelium, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to rabbit epithelium. It defines the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms and identifies allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes. Additionally, it confirms sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy and investigates the specificity of allergic reactions to various agents.
Special Instructions
Collection requires a Serum gel or Red top tube with a minimum specimen volume of 0.3 mL for one allergen or 0.5 mL for every 5 allergens requested. Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial. If not ordering electronically, an Allergen Test Request form must be completed and sent with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients who have previously been treated with immunotherapy, as it does not indicate residual clinical sensitivity. Additionally, false-positive results can occur in patients with elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. Results may show detectable IgE in patients with clinically insignificant sensitivity. Interpretation must consider the clinical context.
