Rabbit Serum Proteins, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to rabbit serum proteins. It helps in defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, and is used for identifying allergens responsible for allergic response and/or anaphylactic episode. It is also used to confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy and to investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. However, testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists, or in patients in whom the medical management does not depend upon identification of allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
The test requires the submission of a serum sample. If not ordering electronically, a completed Allergen Test Request form (T236) must accompany the specimen. Specific IgE testing can only help in the identification phase of allergen sensitivity and should be used in conjunction with a patient's clinical history.
Limitations
Some individuals may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies in serum with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens. False-positive results for IgE antibodies may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases, and these test results must be interpreted cautiously within the clinical context.
