Rapid Plasma Reagin Screen with Reflex, Serum
Use
Aiding in the diagnosis of recent or past Treponema pallidum infection. This test performs rapid plasma reagin screening when Treponema pallidum antibody screen is positive. It is particularly useful in identifying active syphilis infection, recent syphilis, or as a screening tool post-treatment to ensure the effectiveness of therapy.
Special Instructions
This test is only available as a reflex test and is not orderable directly. If the RPR screen is reactive, it triggers an RPR titer test, which incurs an additional charge. If the screen is nonreactive, a syphilis antibody Treponema pallidum particle agglutination test is performed for additional diagnosis, also incurring extra charges.
Limitations
Not useful as a screening or confirmatory test for blood donor specimens. Although treponemal tests may remain reactive for life even after adequate treatment, non-treponemal assays like RPR are needed to determine a patient's current disease state and prior treatment history. False negatives can occur in late or latent syphilis or in severely immunocompromised patients, where non-treponemal antibodies are not present.
