Red Blood Cell (RBC) Enzyme Interpretation
Use
This test is useful for the interpretation of results for the red blood cell enzyme evaluation, identifying defects of red cell enzyme metabolism, and evaluating patients with Coombs-negative hemolytic anemia. Erythrocyte enzyme deficiencies are inherited causes of hemolytic anemia. Most deficiencies result in chronic nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia of variable severity. The test is a consultative evaluation of red cell enzyme activity as a potential cause of early red cell destruction.
Special Instructions
The test is only orderable as part of a profile and requires a consultative evaluation by a hematopathologist. Recent transfusion may mask the patient's intrinsic enzyme activity, and high white blood cell counts can interfere with results.
Limitations
Reticulocytosis can mask enzyme deficiency disorders, and recent transfusions or high white blood cell counts can interfere with results. Comparison of activities with other red blood cell enzyme activities in this panel can be useful.
