Red Sorrel, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of allergy to red sorrel. It helps define the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms and identifies allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes. It can confirm sensitization prior to immunotherapy and investigate the specificity of allergic reactions, including those to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. The test measures IgE antibodies, which are associated with allergic diseases.
Special Instructions
When ordering, ensure that the serum is centrifuged and aliquoted into a plastic vial. The test requisition must be completed and submitted with the specimen. Aliquoting must be performed carefully to ensure accurate results.
Limitations
The test may indicate measurable levels of IgE antibodies in individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity. False positives can occur in the presence of markedly elevated serum IgE due to nonspecific binding. Testing is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to assess residual sensitivity or when allergen specificity identification does not influence medical management.
