Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) In Situ Hybridization, Technical Component Only
Use
This test aids in the identification of respiratory syncytial viral infection, specifically targeting subgroups RSV-A and RSV-B. The virus primarily affects young children by infecting alveolar pneumocytes, creating a characteristic syncytial multinucleated cell structure. The test is designed to specifically identify RSV-A and RSV-B without cross-reactions with other common viruses in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain without a pathologist interpretation. Clients should not order this test with PATHC / Pathology Consultation as the technical stains will be canceled if ordered together. For complete diagnostic or second opinion cases, PATHC should be ordered separately.
Limitations
The test does not provide pathologist interpretation and should be used as a part of a broader diagnostic process. The quality of results may be affected by specimen integrity, especially if paraffin sections are older than 6 weeks, as age can impact immunoreactivity. Additionally, unsuitable glass slides can alter staining results, suggesting that slides should be used quickly after unpackaging and stored appropriately to prevent inconsistent results.
