Rifampin Level
Use
Rifampin Level testing is used in therapeutic drug monitoring to ensure that appropriate blood concentrations of rifampin are achieved for effective treatment. Rifampin is an antibiotic commonly used to treat tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections. Monitoring blood levels is important as subtherapeutic or toxic levels can lead to treatment failure or adverse side effects, respectively.
Special Instructions
Ensure to record the date and time of the last dose and the blood draw time accurately, as this is critical for proper interpretation of the rifampin concentration.
Limitations
The test results are not intended to be used as the sole means for clinical diagnosis or patient management decisions. Accurate interpretation of the test requires the correct recording of the time of last dose and the time of blood collection. Specimens that are grossly hemolyzed or thawed for more than 6 hours will be rejected, affecting test accuracy.
