Rough Pigweed, IgE, Serum
Use
The test is used for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to rough pigweed and defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It helps in identifying allergens responsible for allergic response and/or anaphylactic episodes. This test is also useful for confirming sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy and investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
For ordering, complete the Allergen Test Request form (T236) if not ordering electronically. For a list of allergens available for testing, review the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies PDF. Specimens must be collected and centrifuged with serum transferred into a plastic vial.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in patients where the medical management does not depend on identifying allergen specificity. False-positive results can occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases.
