Seafood Allergen Profile, Serum
Use
The Seafood Allergen Profile is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to seafood, specifically cod, crab, lobster, shrimp, or tuna. It helps in defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes, confirming sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy, and investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
This test is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in whom the medical management does not depend upon identification of allergen specificity. For electronic orders, if not using, an Allergen Test Request form (T236) must be completed and sent with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists. Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies, and results must be interpreted in the clinical context. False positives may occur in patients with high serum IgE due to nonspecific binding.
