Selenium, Blood
Use
This test is useful for the assessment of tissue stores of selenium, an essential element needed by humans and animals. Selenium is used in various applications like photographic devices, gun bluing, plastics, paints, and nutritional supplements. By measuring selenium concentrations in whole blood, the test can provide insight into an individual's selenium status and overall health, given that selenium is a crucial component of several vital biological processes.
Special Instructions
The test is performed using Triple-Quadrupole Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to ensure accurate measurement of selenium levels. A specimen should not be collected for at least 96 hours if gadolinium- or iodine-containing contrast media has been administered, as these substances can interfere with metal tests based on ICP-MS technology.
Limitations
Selenium concentration values should be interpreted in relation to the clinical scenario, including symptoms, physical findings, and other diagnostic results. Misinterpretation of the test results can occur without considering the entire clinical context. Additionally, improper specimen collection and handling, inappropriate test selection, or the presence of interfering substances like gadolinium and iodine contrast media can affect test accuracy.
