Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin, Serum
Use
Diagnosis and follow-up of women with signs or symptoms of androgen excess (e.g., polycystic ovarian syndrome and idiopathic hirsutism). An adjunct in monitoring sex-steroid and antiandrogen therapy. Useful in the evaluation of disorders of puberty, anorexia nervosa, thyrotoxicosis, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular and type 2 diabetes risk assessment, particularly in women.

Limitations
Some individuals can develop antibodies to animal antibodies (such as HAMA or heterophile antibodies), which may cause interference in immunoassays. Results should be interpreted considering the total clinical presentation of the patient and other relevant information. Careful evaluation is needed for patients presenting with cirrhosis or subclinical thyroid conditions.
