Small Dense Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Serum
Use
Aiding in risk management of lipoprotein disorders associated with cardiovascular disease when used in conjunction with other lipid measurements and clinical evaluation. Small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is especially pro-atherogenic due to its higher probability to transverse the arterial wall and longer circulating half-life. Results should be used in conjunction with the patient's medical history and other laboratory and clinical results.
Special Instructions
Patient preparation requires fasting for 8 hours. In cases where the test is not ordered electronically, a Cardiovascular Test Request form (T724) must be completed and sent with the specimen. The test is performed Monday through Friday.
Limitations
Results should not be used as a replacement for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and should not be used in risk calculators. In very rare cases, gammopathy, particularly type IgM (Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia), may cause unreliable results.
