Special Red Cell Antigen Typing, Whole Blood
Use
This test is useful for additional proof of alloantibody specificity and determining possible antibody specificities in complex cases. It is not useful for the purpose of establishing paternity. The presence or absence of a cellular antigen is an inherited trait, and individuals will not make antibodies against antigens present on their own red blood cells.
Special Instructions
The desired antigens to be tested must be included in the order or testing will not proceed. Examples of antigens routinely tested include Fya/Fyb, C, c (little c), E, e (little e), K, Jka, Jkb, M, N, S, s (little s), along with the complete phenotype and McLeod antigens.
Limitations
This test requires the use of an anti-human globulin reagent for certain antigen typings (e.g., Fya, Fyb, s), which necessitates the addition of a direct antiglobulin test performed at an additional charge. Positive or negative reporting will determine the presence or absence of various red cell antigens, with each antigen typed by name followed by a 'pos' or '+' indicating presence or a 'neg' or '-' indicating absence.
