Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen, Serum
Use
The Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen test is useful for aiding in the evaluation and monitoring of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, lung, and cervix. It should not be used for screening for carcinoma or other disorders, as its utility is limited to certain types of squamous cell carcinomas. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin is the second most common form of skin cancer and squamous cell carcinoma antigen represents a subfraction of tumor-associated antigens used as a serum tumor marker.
Special Instructions
This test involves measurement by homogeneous automated immunofluorescent assay on the BRAHMS Kryptor Compact PLUS. It uses time resolved amplified cryptate emission (TRACE) technology, which relies on a nonradioactive transfer of energy between two fluorescent tracers. The test should not be interpreted as absolute evidence of the presence or absence of malignant disease and should be used in conjunction with clinical evaluation and other diagnostic procedures.
Limitations
Elevated concentrations of squamous cell carcinoma antigen may also occur in non-cancerous conditions such as kidney insufficiency, psoriasis, and asthma. There is a potential for a 'hook effect' causing falsely low concentrations in cases of extremely elevated antigen levels. Human anti-mouse antibodies (HAMA) may interfere with the test, which is method dependent, and results obtained with different assays should not be used interchangeably.
