SS-A/Ro Antibodies, IgG, Serum
Use
SS-A/Ro antibodies are associated with several connective tissue diseases including Sjogren syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic sclerosis, and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. These antibodies are particularly significant in childhood and neonatal lupus as well as congenital heart block in infants born to mothers with SLE. Detection of both anti-SS-A 52 (Ro52) and SS-A 60 (Ro60) antibodies can assist in the diagnosis and prognosis of specific clinical phenotypes.
Special Instructions
This test can be useful in screening patients who are at risk for connective tissue diseases or those already diagnosed with autoimmune diseases to further evaluate their condition. Mayo Clinic Laboratories provides a Connective Tissue Disease Cascade for more information about associated testing algorithms.
Limitations
SS-A/Ro antibodies, while often found together, may present differential associations with specific disease phenotypes. While the test can detect antibodies separately, interpretation should consider the patient's overall clinical picture as associations with specific conditions vary. False positives and negatives can occur, and results should not be interpreted in isolation but within the context of the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests.
