Stinging Insects Allergen Profile, Serum
Use
The test is useful in establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to stinging insects such as honeybees, yellow jackets, wasps, yellow-faced hornets, and white-faced hornets. It helps define the specific allergen responsible for eliciting allergic signs and symptoms and confirms sensitization before beginning immunotherapy. The test also assists in investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, which may be responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes.
Special Instructions
For ordering this test, a completed Allergen Test Request form is required if not ordering electronically. Ensure that the collection instructions are followed: centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial for submission. The test is NY State approved and intended for clinical use.
Limitations
This test is not useful for patients who have been previously treated with immunotherapy to see if residual clinical sensitivity exists, or in cases where medical management does not depend on the identification of allergen specificity. False-positive results can occur due to nonspecific binding in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE levels.
