Streptococcus pneumoniae IgG Antibodies, 23 Serotypes, Serum
Use
This test is used for assessing the IgG antibody response to active immunization with both nonconjugated and conjugated pneumococcal vaccines of various valences. It helps in determining an individual's ability to produce an antibody response to polysaccharide antigens, which is crucial for evaluating humoral or combined immunodeficiencies. The test can detect responses to vaccines such as the 23-valent PPSV23, and also the newer conjugated vaccines (PCV13, PCV15, PCV20) that are used prominently in different age groups and patient conditions.
Special Instructions
This test is preferred for patients previously tested for Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes as part of follow-up testing or pre/post-vaccine assessment. For initial evaluation for possible immunodeficiency or pneumococcal vaccination response, other tests such as PNTOR and PNTO may be preferred. When not ordering electronically, complete and send a General Test Request form with the specimen.
Limitations
The test does not define protective concentrations of IgG antibodies for any serotype, therefore functional antibody capacity (opsonization efficiency) is not evaluated. The immune response following vaccination can be influenced by multiple factors including age, immune status, past infections, and carrier state. Quantitative measures provided by this test do not reflect functional antibody activity.
