Sugar Cane (Saccharum officinarum) IgE
Use
The Sugar Cane (Saccharum officinarum) IgE test is used to determine a person's sensitization to sugar cane, a possible allergen. IgE antibodies are specific to allergens, and an elevated level can indicate an allergic response or sensitization to the sugar cane allergen. It can provide useful information for diagnosing and managing allergies that might be induced by exposure to sugar cane.
Special Instructions
Blood should be drawn in a plain red-top tube. If a red-top tube is not available, a serum gel tube is also acceptable. Following collection, the sample should be spun down and transferred to a plastic vial where it should be refrigerated for transport.
Limitations
While the presence of IgE specific to sugar cane may indicate sensitization, it does not necessarily confirm clinical allergy. The results of the IgE test should be considered in the context of the patient's clinical history, symptoms, and other laboratory results to make an appropriate diagnosis. The test may not detect all possible allergens related to sugar cane, and false positives or negatives can occur.
