Supersaturation Profile, Self-Collect, 24 Hour, Urine
Use
The test is used for the diagnosis and management of patients with renal lithiasis. It predicts the likely composition of the stone in patients with radiopaque stones when stone analysis is unavailable. This test can aid in designing treatment programs and identifying specific risk factors for stones using a 24-hour urine collection. It is also useful for monitoring the effectiveness of therapy by confirming decreased crystallization potential, evaluating kidney excretion of acid, urine pH, and estimating protein intake.
Special Instructions
Urine specimens for this test are collected by the patient and must be sent directly to Mayo Clinic Laboratories using the provided collection kit. It is essential to ensure that patient information, including height, weight, and address, is included with the order, particularly for patients under 18 years old. Collection must be scheduled at least 3 days in advance.
Limitations
X-ray dyes and contrast media can affect uric acid test results, and therefore, should be avoided before specimen collection. Patients should wait specified times after certain radiological procedures before starting the urine collection to avoid interference.
