Swordfish, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to swordfish by detecting specific IgE antibodies. It helps in defining the allergen responsible for the allergic response and confirming sensitization prior to immunotherapy. It is also used to investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom, drugs, or chemical allergens. Testing for IgE antibodies is not helpful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy or in those whose medical management does not rely on allergen specificity identification.
Special Instructions
Designate specific allergens from the list in "Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies". If not ordering electronically, complete and submit an "Allergen Test Request" form with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing may not be useful for patients who have received immunotherapy, as it does not determine residual clinical sensitivity. False-positive results might occur in patients with very high serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. It's necessary to interpret the results in the clinical context to avoid diagnostic confusion. Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity may show measurable IgE levels.
