Syphilis IgG with Reflex, Enzyme Immunoassay, Serum
Use
This test aids the diagnosis of infection with Treponema pallidum using an algorithmic approach. It is used for routine prenatal screening and is performed using the reverse screening algorithm. A positive syphilis IgG screening result suggests infection but does not distinguish between recent or past infections. Therefore, results are interpreted with other tests such as RPR and TP-PA to assess the patient's disease state and treatment history.
Special Instructions
This test is not offered as a screening or confirmatory test for blood donor specimens. Collection instructions specify centrifuging and aliquoting serum into a plastic vial.
Limitations
This test is not useful for the diagnosis of congenital syphilis. Serology tests may be negative in severely immunosuppressed patients or in early primary syphilis cases. In untreated or late/latent syphilis, RPR may be negative but EIA and TP-PA should be positive.
