Thyroglobulin Antibody, Serum
Use
This test is useful as an adjunct in the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid diseases, including Hashimoto disease, postpartum thyroiditis, neonatal hypothyroidism, and Graves disease. It helps in the evaluation of autoimmune thyroiditis by detecting thyroglobulin autoantibodies, which are often present in such conditions. The presence of these antibodies can provide supportive evidence for autoimmune thyroiditis, and their detection can aid in the management and treatment strategies for patients.
Special Instructions
For 12 hours before specimen collection, the patient should not take multivitamins or dietary supplements containing biotin (vitamin B7). If not ordered electronically, complete, print, and send the General Test Request form (T239) with the specimen. Test is available for order in New York State.
Limitations
Although the presence of thyroglobulin antibodies is useful for diagnosing thyroid diseases, low titers of thyroid autoantibodies may be observed in the absence of autoimmune or other thyroid diseases and are considered a nonspecific finding. Additionally, anti-Tg values might vary significantly between different methodologies and cannot be directly compared across methods. There is also a potential for interference in some immunoassays due to human anti-mouse antibodies (HAMA) or other cross-reactive substances.
