Tobramycin, Random, Serum
Use
Tobramycin is an antibiotic used to treat life-threatening blood infections by gram-negative bacilli, including Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter species, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Providencia stuartii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia. It is commonly used in combination with beta-lactam antibiotics. Monitoring serum levels of tobramycin is crucial due to potential toxicities such as ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. The test is used to monitor the adequacy of serum concentration during therapy to ensure therapeutic levels are achieved without reaching toxic levels.
Special Instructions
Serum gel tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection. Red-top tubes should be centrifuged and aliquoted within 2 hours of collection. If ordering manually, complete the Therapeutics Test Request Form (T831) and send it with the specimen.
Limitations
This test does not differentiate between peak and trough serum levels unless specified during collection. Collection timing information should be provided to ensure accurate interpretation of results. Measurement errors can occur if samples are improperly collected or handled, including instances of gross hemolysis which lead to rejection of the sample.
