Trichinella Antibody, IgG, Serum
Use
This test is useful as an adjunct in the diagnosis of trichinosis, an infection by the nematode parasite, Trichinella spiralis, acquired through ingestion of contaminated meat. The presence of antibodies suggests current or past infection and should be interpreted alongside clinical, epidemiologic, and other laboratory parameters.
Special Instructions
This test will be obsolete from October 17, 2025, due to unavailability of testing reagent. Alternative tests to order are ZW131 and 34321. This test requires serum collected in a Serum gel tube, preferably, or a Red top tube, with a submission in a plastic vial.
Limitations
Antibodies to Trichinella spiralis may not be detectable until three weeks after infection onset. Negative results in suspicious cases should prompt repeat testing. Sensitivity may be reduced in patients with lower parasitic loads. Cross-reactivity with antibodies against Toxocara canis is possible.
