Troponin I, High Sensitivity, Plasma
Use
Troponin I is an inhibitory protein that regulates the contraction of striated muscle and is used to diagnose myocardial infarction. It is released into the bloodstream within hours of the onset of symptoms of myocardial infarction or ischemic damage, detectable at 3 to 6 hours following chest pain onset, peaking at 12 to 16 hours and remains elevated for 5 to 9 days.
Special Instructions
Plasma gel tube should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection. For Green-top tube, plasma should be aliquoted into a plastic vial within 2 hours of collection. Complete and send a Cardiovascular Test Request Form (T724) if not ordered electronically.
Limitations
A troponin value above the 99th percentile is not always indicative of myocardial infarction. Elevated cardiac troponin I levels can result from conditions like myocarditis, cardiac surgery, angina, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, and pulmonary embolism.
