Tryptase, Serum
Use
Tryptase testing in serum is valuable for evaluating individuals suspected of mast cell activation disorders, such as mast cell activation syndrome, anaphylaxis, or mastocytosis. Elevated levels of tryptase help identify mast cell involvement, which is central to these conditions. The test aids in diagnosing conditions related to excessive mast cell activation and differentiation between cutaneous and systemic mastocytosis.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a General Request (T239) with the specimen. Ensure tryptase samples are processed timely to prevent degradation. Use Mast Cell Disorder: Diagnostic Algorithm for additional guidance.
Limitations
Normal tryptase concentrations may occur in some mast cell activation cases if samples are collected beyond 12 hours after an anaphylactic episode. Tryptase levels might rise post-anaphylaxis or allergen exposure, yet remain below 11.5 ng/mL. Hereditary alpha-tryptasemia, a common trait, can cause elevated basal tryptase without mast cell symptoms, complicating diagnosis.
