Turkey, IgE, Serum
Use
Testing for IgE antibodies in serum is intended for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to turkey and defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. IgE testing is useful for identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses and anaphylactic episodes, confirming sensitization before starting immunotherapy, or investigating specific allergic reactions to various allergens, including insect venom, drugs, or chemicals.
Special Instructions
For complete and proper ordering, if not processed electronically, an Allergen Test Request form (T236) must be completed and sent with the specimen. The test requires a specific collection process, necessitating clinicians to follow provided collection instructions precisely.
Limitations
IgE antibody testing is not useful in patients treated with immunotherapy to determine residual sensitivity or in those where medical management doesn't depend on allergen specificity. False-positive results can occur in patients with high serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. Test results must be interpreted in the context of clinical symptoms since some patients with minimal sensitivity may still show measurable IgE levels.
