Ubiquitin (UBIQ) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
The test is useful for the classification of neurodegenerative diseases. Ubiquitin is a polypeptide found in filamentous inclusions and cytosome-related organelles in idiopathic neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer disease, Pick disease, Lewy body dementia, and Parkinson disease. It is also expressed in Rosenthal fibers in astrocytomas and in primary lysosome-related granules in mature neutrophils. Ubiquitin labels the periphery of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer disease, Lewy bodies in Parkinson disease, and Mallory bodies in alcoholic liver disease.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain without pathologist interpretation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled. The test should not be ordered with PATHC/Pathology Consultation. Instructions for shipping include attaching the green 'Attention Pathology' address label and the pink Immunostain Technical Only label to the transport container. Clients must place orders electronically to access digital images. Manual requisition users will not have digital image access.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical stain performance. Interpretation must be performed by a qualified pathologist in the context of the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests. Stability thresholds for paraffin sections vary and can affect immunoreactivity, with best practices recommending sections cut within 6 weeks. The charge of glass slides can be altered by environmental factors, resulting in inconsistent staining if unsuitable slides are sent.
