Vasoactive Intestine Polypeptide (VIP), Technical Component Only
Use
The test is useful for aiding in the identification of islet cell tumors. Excessive production of vasoactive intestine polypeptide (VIP) by islet cell tumors can be associated with Verner-Morrison syndrome (pancreatic cholera), characterized by massive, watery diarrhea. A subset of normal cells in the pancreatic islets express VIP (<1%). Peripheral nerves and ganglion cells also serve as a positive internal control.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the immunohistochemical stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. The technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled.
Limitations
This test does not include pathologist interpretation, only the technical performance of the stain. If interpretation is required, order PATHC / Pathology Consultation for a full diagnostic evaluation or second opinion. Age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, with stability thresholds varying among published literature and antigen-dependent. Positively charged slides can be affected by environmental factors, affecting staining consistency. Best practices include minimizing storage time and limiting exposure to high humidity and heat.
