Wall Eyed Pike (Sander vitreus)(Stizostedium vitreum) IgE
Use
This test measures the Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies specific to Wall Eyed Pike (Sander vitreus). It is used in the diagnosis and management of allergic diseases, contributing to the assessment of an allergic sensitization to this specific allergen. Allergic sensitization to Wall Eyed Pike can occur in individuals who have direct exposure or have ingested the fish, causing allergic reactions that range from mild to severe. The test aids physicians in identifying the cause of allergic symptoms and in formulating an effective management plan to reduce or avoid exposure, thereby minimizing allergic episodes.
Special Instructions
For optimal serum testing, draw blood in a plain red-top tube or serum gel tube. After drawing, centrifuge the blood and send 0.5 mL of serum refrigerated in a suitable plastic vial. The specimen should be free from lipemia as it is a cause for rejection. Thawing the sample is allowed under warm and cold conditions. The stability of the specimen is up to 28 days when refrigerated and up to 365 days when frozen, offering flexibility in sample transport and storage.
Limitations
This test is designed specifically for the qualitative determination of IgE antibodies against Wall Eyed Pike and does not measure other types of antibodies or factors involved in allergic reactions. As with most IgE specific tests, false positives or negatives can occur, as levels of IgE may fluctuate over time and may be influenced by variables such as medication, age, and concurrent illnesses. Cross-reactivity with other fish species and allergens may occur, potentially affecting test accuracy. Careful patient history and additional tests may be required to confirm the diagnosis and to fully understand the allergic profile of the patient.
