Walnut-Food, IgE, Serum
Use
The test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to walnuts. It helps define the specific allergen responsible for an individual's allergic reactions and is important for confirming sensitization before starting immunotherapy. It is specifically beneficial in identifying allergens that cause allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes.
Special Instructions
For best practice, collect serum using a preferred serum gel collection tube or an acceptable red top tube, centrifuge, and aliquot into a plastic vial. Ensure the submission is in accordance with special instructions provided in the Allergen Test Request form, T236, required if not ordering electronically. Test is performed Monday through Friday, requiring the sample to be in the testing laboratory on these days.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists, or when medical management does not rely on allergen identification. False-positive results may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE levels due to nonspecific binding. Test results should be interpreted in a clinical context as some individuals may have measurable IgE levels without significant clinical sensitivity.
