White Faced Hornet Venom, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to white-faced hornet venom by detecting IgE antibodies in the serum. It helps define the specific allergen responsible for eliciting allergic symptoms and can confirm sensitization prior to initiating specific immunotherapy. The test also aids in investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to various insect venom allergens.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete and send an Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen. Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial for submission.
Limitations
IgE antibody testing is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in scenarios where medical management is not contingent upon identifying specific allergens. Some individuals with insignificant allergen sensitivity may present with measurable IgE levels, necessitating interpretation in a clinical context.
