Wright-Giemsa Stain, technical only
Use
Wright-Giemsa special stain is used to examine blood smears and bone marrow biopsies, highlighting different blood cell types based on their cytoplasmic and nuclear characteristics. It serves an essential role in identifying abnormalities in blood cells including leukemia and anemia, as well as parasitic infections such as malaria.
Special Instructions
This is a technical component only. A pathologist read is not included in this service. Fresh peripheral blood or bone marrow: All attempts will be made to create a smear with aspirate samples older than 24 hours. Samples analyzed for myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) cannot be accurately assessed if they are past 24 hours.
Limitations
The stain's effectiveness in diagnosing MDS diminishes if samples are older than 24 hours. Final turnaround times may be specified differently in specific biopharma study contracts.
