HER2 (Other)
Also known as: HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2), HER-2/neu
Use
HER2, a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor family, is a transmembrane protein with tyrosine kinase activity. Gene amplification and protein overexpression of HER2 have been found in various tumors. This test is used for the semi-quantitative detection of HER-2 antigen in tissue sections, with scoring based on established guidelines for breast cancer and gastric evaluations.
Special Instructions
Recommended for cancers such as endometrium, salivary duct carcinoma, serous carcinoma, ovarian cancer, and other indications where consensus guidelines are lacking.
Limitations
The accuracy of the HER2 test is dependent on the handling and processing of the specimen. The test is based on the 2023 CAP/ASCO guidelines for breast cancer and the 2016 CAP/ASCP/ASCO guidelines for gastric adenocarcinoma. Interpretation should consider the clinical context, and discrepancies might arise if guidelines are not followed.
