Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) for fungus (PASF)
Use
Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) for fungus (PASF) is an immunohistochemistry special stain used to detect fungal organisms in formalin‑fixed, paraffin‑embedded tissue sections. It aids in the diagnosis of fungal infections by highlighting fungal cell walls in tissue specimens, supporting pathologic evaluation and clinical decision‑making.
Special Instructions
Two levels of service are offered: Global (includes both technical staining and pathologist interpretation) and Tech‑Only (technical staining only). New York state approval is indicated, suggesting compliance with NYS regulatory requirements for laboratory testing. For transportation, a cold pack should be used without direct contact with the specimen, and for NYS clients, the date and time of collection must be provided.
Limitations
This is a special stain specific for fungal detection; it is not a broad microbiologic assay and does not identify specific fungal species. Its utility depends on adequate specimen quality; unstained slides or FFPE blocks must be well-preserved and correctly labeled. The stain requires technical expertise and does not substitute for culture or molecular methods when organism identification beyond morphological detection is required.
