Borrelia Species DNA, Real‑Time PCR, with Reflexes, Blood
Also known as: Lyme, Borreliosis, Tick borne
Use
This PCR assay detects the presence of Borrelia species DNA during infection prior to the development of antibodies. Amplification of Borrelia genomic DNA from blood can support the clinical diagnosis of Borreliosis. A negative result does not rule out Borrelia infection because spirochetemia in blood may only be present for a limited time; appropriate serology (antibody) testing may be clinically warranted. Additionally, if Borrelia species DNA is detected, reflex testing is performed to differentiate B. burgdorferi (Lyme disease) and B. miyamotoi (tick‑borne relapsing fever); detection of Borrelia species DNA with negative results for both specific assays may indicate infection by other Borrelia species.
