Cell Culture for Possible Additional Prenatal Studies
Use
This test is ordered in addition to Chromosome Analysis, Amniotic Fluid, when additional monolayer cultures are needed to perform other studies on the submitted amniotic fluid sample. It ensures that cultured cells are available for possible further testing on the same prenatal sample and serves as a backup when initial culture results are inadequate or additional analyses are required.
Special Instructions
If cells from the submitted specimen fail to attach or proliferate, a Prenatal Specimen Culture will be substituted. If results cannot be obtained, the order may be canceled and replaced by a Cytogenetics Communication. Specific details of the additional testing and testing laboratory are required to properly route these cultures.
Limitations
Specimen viability decreases during transit; do not freeze the specimen. Preferred volumes must be met or higher. If culture does not grow, alternative actions (substitution or cancellation) may occur, potentially delaying or preventing results.
