Culture, Urine, Routine
Also known as: Urine, Routine Culture
Use
Routine urine culture is a core diagnostic tool used to detect and identify bacteria causing urinary tract infections. It facilitates species-level identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing to inform appropriate antibiotic therapy decisions, especially in patients with symptoms suggestive of urinary tract infection, recurrent infections, high-risk factors, or indwelling catheters.
Special Instructions
For specimens collected from indwelling catheters, disinfect catheter port, aspirate at least 5 mL into a Vacutainer® grey-top tube (which contains preservative to prevent bacterial overgrowth); stability is 48 hours at room temperature or refrigerated. Small-volume (< 3 mL) submissions should be placed in a sterile container and shipped refrigerated—not in Vacutainer grey-top or Copan UriSponge tubes.
