Donor Hepatitis B Core Total Antibody
Also known as: Donor, HBc, DONOR TESTING ONLY, HBc Ab, Donor
Use
This assay screens for total (IgG+IgM) antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAb) in donors, detecting current or past HBV infection where vaccination would not produce core antibodies. HBcAb may be the sole detectable marker of hepatitis B exposure or infection even when other markers, such as surface antigen or surface antibody, are absent.
Special Instructions
Test is used specifically for donor screening and must utilize FDA‑approved or FDA‑cleared assays without modification. All donor testing is performed at Quest Diagnostics’ Chantilly, Virginia facility. Quest is registered with FDA to perform blood and HCT/P donor testing. Panel components can be ordered separately.
Limitations
Does not distinguish between IgG and IgM classes; reactivity may persist for years post‑infection or past immunity. False‑positives may occur in immunocompromised patients or due to factors such as rheumatoid factor or immunization. Interpretation requires correlation with other HBV markers.
