Drug Toxicology Naltrexone, with Confirmation, Oral Fluid
Use
Naltrexone is a medication used in addiction treatment and other clinical contexts; presence of naltrexone or its metabolites in oral fluid may indicate recent ingestion. This oral fluid–based drug toxicology test facilitates detection and confirmation of naltrexone in situations when urine collection is not practical, supporting treatment monitoring or compliance assessment. Oral fluid testing is advantageous for its convenience, reduced tampering risk, and quicker detection window compared to urine tests. Quest Diagnostics uses liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC‑MS/MS) for presumptive and confirmatory analysis in oral fluid drug testing, including this naltrexone assay, although specific cutoff values and performance characteristics are not shown here.
Special Instructions
Specimen collection utilizes the Quantisal™ oral fluid collection device: collect approximately 1 mL of oral fluid (+/–10 %) into the collection device, which contains buffer for stability; this device ensures adequate volume and is user‑friendly. Oral fluid collections are usually observed and take about 5 minutes. The test is categorized under Quest’s Drug Toxicology oral fluid testing panels and is offered alongside other single‑class or panel tests.
Limitations
Detection windows for drugs in oral fluid are generally shorter than in urine—typically a few hours to about 24‑50 hours post‑use—which may limit detection of substances with longer clearance; concentrations in oral fluid do not predict dose or timing. The test may be subject to limitations if insufficient volume is collected. No explicit analytical sensitivity, specificity, or cutoff thresholds are provided here; presumptive positives are reflexed to definitive confirmation.
