Folate, RBC
Also known as: Red Blood Cell Folate, RBC Folic Acid, Folic Acid, RBC, Red Cell Folate
Use
This test measures folate within red blood cells (RBC folate), reflecting long-term folate status rather than short-term fluctuations as seen in serum folate. It aids in the assessment of folate deficiency, which can contribute to megaloblastic anemia and other hematologic disorders.
Special Instructions
Collect whole blood in an EDTA (lavender-top) tube; minimize light exposure during handling and storage. Do not freeze. Transport refrigerated at 2°–8 °C. Hematocrit may be required if whole blood is frozen (as indicated by other site for calculation of RBC folate).
Limitations
Specimen must be whole blood; freezing prevents hematocrit determination, and a default HCT may be used which could affect RBC folate calculation. Exposure to light or improper temperature during handling may degrade analyte.
