Proteinuria may be characteristic of renal disease and concentrations may be increased in settings such as diabetes, hypertension, nephritic syndrome, or drug-induced nephrotoxicity; measurement of total protein and creatinine in a random urine sample allows calculation of protein/creatinine ratio to assess kidney function and detect abnormal urinary protein excretion.
